The Feasibility of Renewable Natural Gas in New Jersey

With traditional natural gas being one of the top options for heating in United States and present threat climate change, there is a demand an alternative clean fuel source. A Renewable Natural Gas Implementation Decision-Making Conceptual Model was created to provide framework considering feasibility renewable (RNG) projects applied New Jersey, specifically investigating landfills wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Data from US EPA’s Landfill Methane Outreach Program Jersey’s Department Environmental Protection Sewage Sludge databases were used identify seven 22 WWTPs as possible locations RNG projects. Landfills found have higher potential producing RNG, on average potentially enough heat 12,792 homes per year versus 1227 WWTP. Additionally, landfills, while having capital expenses, lower projected payback periods, averaging 5.19 years compared WWTP’s 11.78 years. WWTPs, however, generally are located closer existing pipelines than when they produce more 362 million standard cubic feet (MMSCFY) biogas financially feasible. at Monmouth County Reclamation Center, Ocean Landfill, Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission WWTP show greatest potential. Greenhouse emission reductions these facilities utilizing all available would be 1.628 metric tons CO2 equivalents year, synonymous removing over 351,000 passenger vehicles road each year. In addition, expanding federal state incentives encompass necessary reduce financial barriers throughout US. Overall, this paper supports hypothesized conceptual model examining through examples Jersey confirms production waste streams.
